Black Swans live in the fresh, brackish and salt waters of Australasia. They feed on water plants, dabbling in the shallows and upending in deeper water. After the breeding season they moult feathers and, as they become flightless, often gather in thousands on open lakes. A nest of reeds built near the water's edge holds up to 9 eggs.
