AUSTRALIAN BIRDS - Lyrebird

The Lyrebird, is a bird which resembles a long-legged brown chicken, except for the striking, long tail-feathers of the male, the outer two of which are white, banded with brown and curved outwards at the end.

When the tail of lyrebirds is raised, the shape resembles a lyre.  The displaying male is very noisy and mimics a wide range of other birds and even dogs and cats.

The female builds a large, domed nest of twigs and leaves, often on the ground, in which she lays a single egg. The lyrebird have very restricted ranges in eastern Australia, and live in damp eucalyptus forests.
